About the Artwork: How Long Is a Piece of String originated from a conversation about the uncertain nature of medical prognosis, but it evolved into a broader meditation on life’s fundamental unpredictability. The idiom – used to describe something immeasurable – became a framework for exploring how we navigate through ambiguity and the unknowable.

At 64x84", the painting’s scale creates an immersive field that physically embodies the concept of immeasurability, inviting viewers to lose themselves in its expansiveness – just as we often find ourselves adrift in life’s unanswered questions.

Its textural complexity, built through intersecting marks and tonal shifts, reflects the web of possibilities that shape any meaningful journey. Dense passages give way to transparency, suggesting how moments of clarity emerge from confusion, only to dissolve again into uncertainty.

Working primarily in varying shades of white, with occasional contrasting elements, I created a surface that transforms with shifting light and distance. This perceptual variability reinforces the work’s central theme: that understanding is always provisional, always open to reinterpretation.
