REMNANT SERIES
This mixed media artwork is made from dried acrylic paint scraped off my palette, saved for over a decade, and cast in epoxy resin.
I started peeling the paint off of my palette in 2007 after the unexpected death of a close friend. It was something she did when she came to my studio and there was a calming satisfaction in the monotonous act of scraping the paint away. Some of the pieces of dried paint were beautiful - too pretty to throw away - so I saved them in clear boxes. As the pile increased, the box filled with miniature, layered versions of my paintings: hundreds of hours of painting & the past all neatly condensed into the box.
It took me over a decade to decide how to utilize these tiny remnants of paintings past. I sorted the pieces by color, carefully arranged them and taking into account all sides including the back. I wanted each side to provide a different but beautiful view. I see them as three-dimensional paintings that can be displayed on a wall as well as a flat a flat surface.
This series condenses time and memory, and as it expanded, I incorporated maps. Maps tell us where we are going, where we have gone, and where we can go; they are the past, present and future on paper. When cast in resin, the map is still recognizable but permanently compressed: our nostalgia, emotions and memories neatly reduced to a few square inches.
