Mirror Paintings: Cuba Series
This series of mirror paintings is inspired by photographs I took in Cuba. Rather than replicating the photographs exactly, each painting serves as an emotional interpretation of a real place, with the location identified in the title. The square format of each painting is a nod to social media, reflecting our common experience of seeing images in this compact, familiar shape.
Painting on mirrors presents unique challenges.I build up layers of paint, adding and removing elements until the piece "feels" complete. Removing dried paint is particularly delicate — too much water or an overly forceful gesture can easily destroy the entire work.
I intentionally leave parts of the mirror exposed to create a sense of fluidity. The reflection allows the painting to continually evolve, with its surroundings playing an active role. For example, someone wearing a red shirt while viewing “La Mañana” will see their reflection alter the composition, introducing red into the painting. Similarly, in the image of "Cielo," the blue sky is reflected in the work because it was photographed outdoors. In “Aguamala,” the reflection includes the sky, clouds, and even my blonde hair. I appreciate how these unedited moments capture fragments of my life and environment.
Each painting is sealed with a final coat of resin, applied imperfectly to echo the gestural abstraction of the work. The resin not only protects the painting but also marks its completion—an unalterable, finished piece.
Each work measures 12”W x 12”H x 1.5”D, is signed and dated on the back, and arrives wired and ready to hang. The sides of the panels are painted white. If you're interested in a similar piece listed as "sold," feel free to email me.
