About the Artwork: In Measuring Sand, I explore the ephemeral nature of time and the shifting boundaries between reality and memory. The soft gradation of colors—from deep purples to pale lilacs—represents the layers of experience that accumulate like grains of sand, each one unique yet indistinguishable in the whole.
This painting reflects my ongoing fascination with how we perceive time as something measurable, yet intangible. The blurred textures and subtle drips evoke the erosion of memories, much like how sand slips through our fingers, impossible to grasp fully. In this piece, I wanted to create a visual metaphor for that fleeting quality, inviting viewers to pause and consider the ways in which we attempt to measure the immeasurable.
As with much of my work, this piece is influenced by the vast skies and waters surrounding my studio, where the horizon blurs into the distance, and the passage of time feels both endless and fleeting.
This title of this painting is a reference to the passage of time, ie the futility of counting grains of sand. Im always attracted to paradoxes and this work is a meditative piece about how losing consciousness of time while painting can be a positive and negative factor.
