About the Artwork: SFHP (No. 5) is part of a series inspired by my surroundings at my studio, located on a decommissioned naval base on the San Francisco Bay. In this series, I explore the interplay between water and sky, capturing the experience of seeing both elements merge and reflect each other.
The graduated blues in this work evoke the distinctive quality of light over the Bay – how morning fog dissolves into afternoon clarity, how water holds and transforms color through changing weather and time of day. The textural variations throughout the composition suggest the constant movement of both water and atmosphere, elements that are never truly static despite sometimes appearing so.
Through multiple layers of paint and deliberate mark-making, I've sought to capture not just the visual aspects of this environment, but also its emotional resonance – the sense of expansiveness and possibility that comes from living at the edge where land meets water meets sky.
The title SFHP is an acronym for "San Francisco Hunter's Point," which is the neighborhood where I live and work. The number indicates the order in which I completed each piece in the series. This work is deeply connected to my daily environment, where the vast horizons and shifting colors of the water continually influence my perception and artistic practice.
