Things Remembered is a personal exploration of the collective and individual experiences during the pandemic. Created in 2023, this work encapsulates the solitude and introspection characterized in this period, as well as the blurred boundaries of time and reality.
My studio, located at a decommissioned naval base on the San Francisco Bay, has been the source of inspiration for this and other work influenced by the vast skies and changing colors of the water. This natural environment served as both a sanctuary and a source of creativity during the pandemic's challenging times. The upper portion of the canvas alludes to the ever-changing waters of the San Francisco Bay and the reflection of light on the water. These lighter tones embody optimism, as well as moments of clarity and hope. The darker shades of blues and greens symbolize the depth of our experiences and the grounding presence of the natural world. This transition between tones mirrors the fluidity of emotions and the shifting perceptions of reality experienced during the pandemic. The interplay of light and color on the canvas reflects the resilience and adaptability required to navigate the uncertain times in life. In all my work, the dark is always on the bottom.
Although Things Remembered is visual representation of my own personal emotions, I hope the work offers a space for contemplation and invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences, as well as serve as a testament to the enduring beauty and strength found in nature and within ourselves.
